Day 8 - Adventure in der Altstadt

On Monday 13.02.12, Rachel and I went to the Postamt (post office) so she could get a box to send some things to her man back home. We survived, she got a box and enough stamps for the under 500g flat-rate. All auf Deutsch, natuerlich. After that we wandered toward the Altstadt area, which has tons of stores. I would say around 200, but I can't be sure because there are so many twisty roads leading between them. As we were walking along, we visited a few shops, checked out the prices to compare the best stores, then continued toward the denser shop area. It was during this time that two guys were walking in front of us. One guy turned around and glanced at us, then said "Wie geht's?" or "Was ist los?" something along the lines of "What's up." Rachel, being the nice lady she is said "Hallo" but nothing more. The guy took it as an invitation to talk to us. He.... really liked Rachel.

He asked us what we were doing around here, we told him, shopping for food. (In Englisch now) and then we said we were studying here and he heard we were studying at Jacob's, which we weren't, but we didn't actually want him to know. He kept trying to ask us what we do on Friday's and Saturday's and if we wanted to hang out sometime. We don't do anything but study. He was convinced that he wanted to and was going to buy us/Rachel food. He told us he was African-German from Nigeria and his friend from Ghana. He gave Rachel his business card, apparently he cuts hair at a place called "One Night Stand" and is friend said they were doing well. Weird name for a haircuttery. After chatting some more and not knowing what to do, it came out that (after checking Rachel out, like walking around her...) that he likes healthy woman, really likes them and not the model-type. I took it as a compliment and he gave me a high-five. Finally, his bus came and we got out of the situation as fast as we could. I was oddly paranoid that they might steal something because he said "Oh you're Americans!" a lot louder than a normal person might. Thereafter we bought some Ritter Sport Schokolade!

After that fiasco, we went back to our area for grocery shopping at Aldi in the Walle Center because it was closer, and we wanted to drop off our backpacks. We ended up going to Edeka Center store, which was awesome. It was big, had a huge selection of fruits, vegetables, meats cheeses, you name it and it was cheap! Good tea, 20 bags per box ,49 euros! However, I somehow managed to forget all my money and had to use my card. I was startled when I saw the transaction online, then remembered my money is worth less. The good news, so far, is that there wasn't a foreign transaction fee. We'll see if it pops up at the end of the month, I suppose.

If anyone says anything corny, this will be my response.

By the way, Senf (mustard) makes sandwiches 10 times better. It was a good investment.
