Day 5 - Our First Restaurant!
So, normally I wait until the next day so I can say everything that happened, but oh man. Today was quite exciting! (If you can't tell I think a lot... you'll know pretty shortly)
So, normal day of class aside from a fourth of the class not showing up. Lunch was fairly uneventful too, aside from me deciding to grab a more expensive salad plate thing. I wanted more vegetables than the Essen I (Food choice one) had today, plus it was breaded fish that didn't look appetizing to me. I found out that I don't like the "German Salad", it had mayo and other flavors that are strange, other than the mandarin oranges. Afterwards Rachel and I wanted to go to the Universum/ world's largest science and technology museum with the Goethe Institut, but no one was at the meeting place. We think it was cancelled due to lack of interest or they left early because only one person signed up (we had forgotten), so we decided to head over there. It looks like a giant beached whale, or a UFO to me.
After we finally figured out how to get into the building, we decided that maybe we wouldn't go because they weren't there either. So, Rachel and I went back to the Sprachzentrum in the school and checked out books. I decided to get "Es war einmal..." a collection of short Brother's Grimm stories. I can read and understand about 95% so that's nice. It's interesting too. After that we played around on the internet some more because we had no internet at our accommodation. Around 5, we wandered home to find that Herr Thanner had figured out a way for the internet to work, but only wired and there was only one slot for it.
Rachel decided to take things into her own hands and looked up how to make it work online, we needed an IP/url for the router so I looked on the bottom. And lo and behold... there was a WLAN button. I pushed it... the wireless worked. I must have looked at the bottom of that thing two or three times before and managed to miss it, so... my internet works! I can talk to people back home now because I'm not on at 8 in the morning at the latest! Yay!
Anyways, Rachel and I decided that we wanted to go out and about and try Waldeck's Gaststätte literally just down the street. We looked at the menu and saw everything was quiet cheap, under 4 euros. It looked like it was just drinks, but we figured there was probably food there too. I went through the first door and smelled cigarette smoke. We go in the next door and find a pool table, a pinball machine and a bar with 5 people sitting around it, smoking. They seemed very excited when we walked in, but it was gross, so we decided to leave. On our way out some asked why we were leaving so soon... We were hungry. My coat reeked of smoke for another 10 minutes for having only been there for 1...
We come back to the apartment to look up other restaurants on the internet (yay! again!) and find a place called "Pretty Lady" that was a cafe and "Restaurant Feuerwache Bremen". We swang by both and saw that the first was another bar, but it looked classier, and the second was Italian and nice looking. We asked for a table and he said they were full. Fortunately, the waiter pointed us in the direction of another restaurant. We followed his directions to a place called "Restaurant Port". We looked through the menu and saw some interesting, and delicious food. She saw Pizza, I saw curry. We decided to eat there. The waitress offered us a few places to sit. We sat down, and then a waiter came over to take our drink order. We didn't have one and I didn't understand everything he said so Rachel told him nothing yet.
I realized that you had to pay for water, and thought that was ridiculous, and then I was sort of persuaded to buy a drink. Bailey's and then he asked with ice? I said sure, (I don't know...) I told Rachel that I've heard it's a dessert drink, but whatever. It was such a tiny amount for the price and the after taste was bad, but first sips were good. We then were giving little appetizers of cheese and vegetables and bread, all of which was quite good. Rachel's pizza was huge!! It was about 2 feet long and like 3/4th of a foot wide! It was delicious too. My vegetable curry came with wild rice (one of my favorite types) and chutney, even though it had mushrooms, some gross ones, it was also very delicious! We both had left overs of course.
To be honest, neither of us could stop smiling, we had just ordered our first meal in German in Germany in a restaurant. It became more evident to us and them that we were not native German speakers though. The waitress made a joke to Rachel about the pizza and she smiled and said ja. I think she said something about fighting with the pizza, anyhow. Then she asked if we wanted to take it home, we said yes and then asked if we wanted to have it refrigerated. That seemed strange, but kind. I suppose most people go out for entertainment and stay around chatting for a while. We decided to leave. We were completely ecstatic about the experience. We had spoken only in German and ordered and received exactly what we wanted. As I said to Rachel as a joke, "I'm a big girl now! I ordered my food all by myself!" This is in reference to schooling telling us we were learning "baby Deutsch" or "toddler Deutsch". We laughed and thoroughly enjoyed our journey back, ending the day on a great note.
I was so excited, I had to say this all now. :)
