123 - To Dresden (On the longest bus ride ever)!

7.6.12 - Donnerstag, Thursday

The day was an early start, but for me, it was actually later than usual. We had to meet at the Hochschule by 8.40 and leave on the bus at 9. The only time we could get there was either 20 minutes early or 10 minutes late, it seemed because it was a holiday (Corpus Christi) so the buses ran on a Sunday schedule. Both of us were hungry, stopped by a gas station and bought some delicious baked goods, then returned and positioned ourselves on the bus.

During the trip we made 2 designated stops and one quick one because a girl had to go to the bathroom, the bus, which only fit 28 people, had no toilet on board. The breaks usually took a little longer than necessary, but that always happens when you have so many people. Which ended up being good and bad because the trip was supposed to take approximately 6.5 hours, but ended up taking about 9 hours because of construction, traffic and all the stops that were made. A few of the stops were entertaining though.

(A view out the front - Internet portal for stoppers to use. - Well... this was interesting. I'll let you figure it out. It's punny, but dirty too...)

Finally, we made it to the outer limits of Dresden. What a sight it was. It was interesting because a lot of it was bombed and recently restored, but restored so it looked like the old, but the building material was very obviously newer. We made it to the youth hostel at about 6:30 and had a short amount of time to scramble to our rooms and settle in. It was weird, but very nice place. Everyone had a two-bed room with a whole bathroom attached. It was super clean and comfy. There was also quite a bit of room. I would go back. But we didn't have time to dawdle, we were all already an hour late for the scheduled meeting time.
(Entering Dresden - Zschertnitz [The name was amusing so I took a picture], a part of Dresden. They have a lot of Czech sounding things because they are so close to the boarder. - Random church we passed on the bus.)

We all made our way outside to meet up to go to dinner at a place called Wenzel Prager Bierstuben. We hopped back on the bus instead of walking as planned to get there sooner. The driver dropped us off by the building so we could see it and we walked a few minutes to get the restaurant.  We got there a sometime after 7 and sat down, looking through the menus. It was interesting because it was a mixture of Czech and German food. Some of the words in the menu were weird because they were Czech letters but when said, formed German words. It was also cool that the back of the napkins had a few words with Czech and German equivalents so you could learn. "Wir lernen Tschechisch" "We learn Czech"
(Our hostel - I snapped a quick picture of a part of the city as we were going over a bridge. - Some interesting building with a nice fountain in the background.)

We were at the restaurant enjoying each other's company and food until about 10:30 or so, boy was that food lecker! (delicious!)  After we all paid (if we were over out $10 limit), we left and walked back toward our youth hostel. Dresden is such a beautiful place a night with everything lit up the way it was. Unfortunately, my camera doesn't like night shots much, so some of the pictures weren't as nice as they could be. The cathedral there is called St. Trinitatis. As we wandered around Theaterplatz, a large part of the group decided they were going to go check out the Dresden night life. Seeing as it was already 11 and we had to be out of our rooms at 8:30, I didn't think it was a good idea. I value my sleep! Not to mention, I was very tired too...  So Rachel, myself, and 5 others went back to the hostel "early" that night.
