Day 9 & 10, V-Tag und Presentation - Deep-Dish

Yesterday, Tuesday, was Valentine's Day 14.02.12.
Usual boring day of class. However, we did have lunch with one of my classmates! He's from Brazil, my age, and is studying Naval Engineering. Basically boat design. It was neat to find out, although I suppose not surprising in anyway, that our course curricula were very similar at this point. However, his school has ~80,000 students and it is free, so it's no big deal if you end up taking 6 or 7 years to finish your engineering degree. We had a lot more in common than I would have expected, but an engineer is really a universal role.

We had a ton of homework which took me about 2 to 2.5 hours, which unfortunately meant I would miss the bowling meet-up that the Institut set up and I was convinced to go to by my classmates, or so I thought. Apparently they wait 15 minutes, besides the point. I took that time to attempt to unlock/ jailbreak the iPhone mein Vater gave to me a few years back so I could use it on the German network. It somehow messed up, when I restored it, it wouldn't even work with iTunes anymore and that's when my extreme dislike for apple was reiterated. They had no e-mail support, which is an issue if your phone that you're trying to make work, won't and your other phone is pay-as-you go so waiting costs a lot of money. It ruined my night a little because my smartphone was being dumb. Finally, I restored it again and everything was right in the world again and I didn't have to talk to apple!

To make things worse, I found out after this fiasco that the SIM karte weren't compatible anyhow. I should have thought of that sooner.

After all that Rachel and I had a mini-celebration for V-Day. Nothing exciting.

Today, Wednesday 15.02.12 was interesting.
My procrastination turned around and bit me in the butt. We have to do praesentationen in my class about our Heimat (home country) about any Thema (theme) you want, and there were two days next week and the very last week of class open, which would give me plenty of time to write it and turn it in two days prior to my Referat (speech). I figured that after class I would sign up in the last spot so I wouldn't have to crawl over anyone. Turns out while I was out during one of the breaks only the presentation slot for this upcoming Monday was open, therefore the text is due tomorrow. (I finished in and all my homework already. It only took me three hours...).

I will be doing my presentation over how to make Chicago Deep-Dish Pizza. :) I'm hoping to have these pictures, hopefully they do it justice!:

After class Rachel and two of her classmates, Tatiana and Kerly. from Brazil and ____ respectively. Tatinana is definitely a character. Rachel and I ate tomato soup with lots of veggies and meat and the two of them bought Beef and basically ravioli. For some reason Tatiana was determined to give away half of her plate because it was too much for her but she was determined to get a cupcake afterwards. However, they certainly did look delicious! Earlier, during one of the breaks, Tatiana asked if I was a model (oddly, this has come up again) because she thought I looked exotic (which is odd because she's from Brazil, pretty, and probably 3/4ths my weight). Then commented about something and model while she was eating, I don't know. Then she picked up a magazine with a monkey on it and said it was a picture of her and she mimicked the face pose. She's funny, and strange, but very nice. She invited us over to cook sometime later!

Again, I think it's amazing that we can all chat and understand each other because we have a common language of German, even if it's weak.

Furthermore, I've been reading "Es war einmal... Maerchen der Brueder Grimm", which has a lot of Brother Grimm stories. It's pretty interesting, and fascinating that I can read it and how the stories carried over to American fairytales.

I also just remembered that Serge, the kind man from Russia who gave me a walnut, got a little crazy when we were practicing phone conversations. The student calls their teacher's house to say they are sick, a person answers says the teach is not there and will take a message. It was two guys, Serge and Duarte (from Portugal) and Duarte called the house asking for Serge's "Wife" after he said he was sick Serge asked "Why are you calling? Why are you calling my house?" and then pretended to pull out a shotgun and asked "What is your address?" He must really love his Frau. I was almost on the verge of tears because it was so awesome. His Russian accent is very cool sounding too.
